THE GLADIATORS HAND SIGNED NORM PROVAN ARTHUR SUMMONS
Description
THE GLADIATORS
On Saturday, August 24, 1963 at the Sydney Cricket Ground, a record crowd of 69,860 witnessed St. George and Western Suburbs do battle in the Grand Final. The match was played in atrocious conditions after heavy overnight rain had turned the ground into a quagmire. As the players left the field, and streams of sunlight illuminated the ground - bathing opposing captains Norm Provan and Arthur Summons in light. At that moment Sun-Herald photographer, John O’Gready, snapped a shot - capturing the two rivals forever, locked in eternal embrace. The photograph, which won the prestigious British Press Photographers Award and became commonly know as The Gladiators, is widely regarded as the most enduring and evocative image in Australian sporting history. It captured the spirit of the game itself and has become the very symbol of sportsmanship in Rugby League football.
